Inspiring Enough? – The Spire Stone Review

“Discover Calm”, says the Spire Stone’s package on a clear white background. The dream of every mother with three small children or company leader before a financial audit. However, more than just being a mindfulness device, Spire also advertises this wearable as an activity tracker that keeps track of your steps and calories. How do activities and passive meditation come together? I got curious and hastily opened the box to get my hands on the Spire Stone and put it to the test. Here’s my verdict. Mindfulness … with technology? Before diving into the product, let’s start with mindfulness. The textbook definition of the term will state that it pertains to a calm state of mind focused on the present moment. This state of mind can be achieved through the practice of meditation techniques, ...

Are You Going To Wake Up From Cryosleep?

More than 300 people let their bodies have cooled down to -200 Celsius and preserved in liquid nitrogen in the hope that someday in the future, science will be able to cheat death and make them wake up from their Sleeping Beauty state. As of today, no one knows whether they will ever have the chance for a second life. Relax, David, open your eyes! That’s the last line from Vanilla Sky, the movie remake about a wealthy playboy in cryosleep waking up after 150 years from his lucid dream (starring Tom Cruise as David). The audience doesn’t know what happens next, and whether he can survive the procedure, not to speak about living in a society where every one of his friends and relatives is dead, and people live a completely different way of life than he was used to. Concerns about the feasi...

Blink vs Ring: what are the differences between Amazon’s cams?

If you're looking into getting a home security camera, you may well be looking at products from Blink or Ring. Both brands are owned by Amazon, but they bring very different capabilities and price points to the party. Blink offers affordable security cameras for in and around the home. It’s a scalable, entry-level system that’s designed to be easy to fit and use. For a relatively low price, you can set up motion-sensing cameras and have alerts send to your smartphone. There’s no monthly fee, and the cameras use regular batteries. Ring is best known for its video doorbells, but the security firm has expanded to offer a range of complementary security cameras. Prices are higher than for Blink products, and you’ll need to subscribe to one of Ring's Protect plans if you want to store rec...

How to overclock your RAM

Overclocking memory isn't quite the ticker-tape parade of increased performance found when boosting your GPU or CPU, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be considered. A lot of memory comes boasting great overclockability (of course it's a word) but many builders are so keen on tweaking other components, they plum forget all about it. Whilst tweaking your RAM is unlikely to yield noticeably higher frame rates in your favourite games, it can make a big difference to desktop use and file operations - and that alone makes it worth it. Plus, overclocking is one of the many things that make being a PC owner so great. We'd overclock our keyboards if we could. But how does one get the most out of those innocuous sticks of RAM? There are a number of approaches, and like CPU overclocking your ...

‘Drishyam’: A Cover-up In Itself

Karan Malhotra’s Brothers (2015) is an official remake of Gavin O’Connor’s Warrior (2011), a film ripe for an Indian adaptation. Family drama and action with a dash of sports – you can already sense Malhotra manipulating audiences with Agneepath-like brazen melodrama. The film will be judged not purely on its own merits and demerits, but also partly by its ability to retell a story already made into another film. Latest release Drishyam takes the opposite route; it’s an unofficial adaptation of a book where the landscape has been altered in an effort to remove traces of the original. You may already know that Drishyam is an official remake of a similarly titled Malayalam film (2013), written and directed by Jeethu Joseph. But the Malayalam film itself was an unofficial adaptation ...

Ramesh Sippy: Sholay was dubbed the end of Bollywood

Not all films are accorded the status of being iconic, but Ramesh Sippy's magnum opus, Sholay, that recently completed its 45th anniversary, passes all tests of enduring greatness. In the latest edition of Time Pass, a series of webinars organised by The New Indian Express group, the legendary filmmaker took a walk down memory lane to Ramgarh, as he fielded questions from TNIE's Entertainment Editor Sudhir Srinivasan and senior journalist Kaveree Bamzai. Touching upon the locations the film was shot in, Ramesh said, "We wanted to break away from the usual look in dacoit films then. Through our art director Achrekar, we found Ramgarh in and around Bengaluru. We built no set for it. Even the scenes involving Thakur and Basanti were shot largely outdoors. Our decision clearly worked out.” ...
